Chapter Seventeen

Kendall took a deep breath and exhaled. She didn’t want to do this, and she certainly wasn’t in the mood to schmooze today. Especially not following the news that Trina had contracted another corner unit over the past few days. Whatever lead she once had was quickly slipping away.

She turned off her car and sat in the driver’s seat, brooding for a minute. The past week had been a blur. Ever since her run-in with Trina at the Harborside, she’d been a little off. Sure, she’d finalized those rental sales and things were going well with the Cyclebar contract, but she felt like she was spinning her wheels on ideas to move the other units. All her calls had resulted in dead ends. And now she was going to do a face-to-face with someone she had never met, and she loathed the idea of being shot down in person. Because she hated failure, and though this wasn’t guaranteed to end in failure, she wasn’t confident it wouldn’t.

Clyde had recommended she reach out to a few of the area country clubs to see if she could advertise there. It wasn’t a bad idea, but she’d never ventured into this realm before, so her meeting with the marketing director today felt like a job interview. She didn’t usually shy away from advertising her skills and promoting herself, but this made her uneasy for a few reasons and they all had to do with her father.

Her father had made a habit of touring the country club scene in his early days of building his real estate empire. He’d rubbed elbows with all the right people and made most of the connections he later used to expand his business. Lots of politicians and wealthy small business owners liked those clubs, largely, Kendall assumed, because membership made them feel superior to those who couldn’t afford the annual dues. Kendall knew most of her father’s business deals and political canoodling was done on the golf course or at the private poker tables at most of the Connecticut clubs. In Kendall’s mind, these sorts of places allowed people to brag about all their wealth and laugh about all their privilege while managing to make social connections to ensure they’d always be one step ahead of the average person. All in all, Kendall thought country clubs were gross, just like her father.

Dick Yates had called her three times since that night at the Harborside, and he’d even ventured to leave two messages. The first one was requesting her ear to talk, but the second one, a few days later, was demanding. Kendall could hear the seething rage in her father’s voice over voice mail, and it had made her shiver. He was angry that she was avoiding his request to speak with her, which made her want to talk to him even less.

That angry voice mail had rattled her. She wasn’t used to being on the defensive these days. Well, except of course when Trina put her there.
